What is an Electroluminescent Sign?

Electro luminescence is the most cutting-edge lighting technology being used in light-up signs today. It takes very little current and produces a cool light (no wasted heat energy), so an EL sign is very energy-efficient. Think of it as a "light bulb sandwich" of phosphor laminated beteween two conductive layers (electrodes). When a current is passed through the electrodes, the phosphor lights up - just like in a firefly's glow.
But how does that make a sign?
- A high-quality, high-resolution image is printed on a transparent panel
- A copy of the image is divided into several different sections, a "phosphor sandwich" is created to match the outline of each section, they're assembled like a jigsaw puzzle, and the image is precisely aligned over that assembled base
- A computer chip is programmed to send a current through each section in the order of the desired animation
- Current flows through the electrodes in its programmed journey, producing the effect of a smoothly animated backlit sign
- Your animation can be as simple or complex as you like
